L5 Flashcards
What is gravity?
A force between any two objects with mass - one of the objects needs to be really heavy to measure it. Gravity is weaker the further you are from an object. Gravity acts on both objects - you also attract the earth to you.
What did Isaac Newton discover?
How to calculate the force of gravity on objects. His work was so important that the unit of force was named after him.
Why aren’t things noticeably attracted to each other but they are attracted to earth (gravitationally speaking)?
The force of gravity between the two people is so small it isn’t noticeable because neither of them are extremely heavy.
What will happen if you got a cut in space - what would happen to the blood?
The blood will stay in where you got cut.
What is mass?
It is the amount of matter inside of something and even if you go to another planet your mass would never change - it will always stay the same.
What is weight?
It is a force caused by the pull of gravity acting on a mass and it has both magnitude (distance) and direction.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Weight is a force whereas mass isn’t. Weight changes if you go to other places with different gravitational field strengths (such as other planets) whereas mass never changes.
How do you calculate mass?
Weight ÷ gravitational field strength.
How do you calculate gravitational field strength?
Weight ÷ mass.
How do you calculate weight?
Mass x gravitational field strength.
What is mass measured in?
Kg.
What is gravitational field strength measured in?
N/kg or newtons per kilogram.
What is weight measured in?
N.
If two objects had the exact same surface area but one object was heavier than the other, which object will fall first?
They will fall the same because if they have the exact same surface area, they will experience similar air resistance.
