L1 Flashcards
In our solar system, how many planets do we have?
8.
In our solar system, how many stars do we have?
1, the sun.
What two groups are the 8 planets split into?
The terrestrial planets and the Jovian planets.
What are the terrestrial planets like?
They are the smaller planets and they are (mainly) made of rock. They are also more dense than the Jovian planets as they are made of rock.
What are the Jovian planets like?
They are the bigger planets and they are (mainly) made of gas, hydrogen and helium. They are also less dense than the terrestrial planets because they are made of gas.
What are the names of our planets? (In order).
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
What separates the terrestrial planets and the Jovian planets?
The asteroid belt.
What surrounds our solar system?
The Kuiper belt.
What is outside of our solar system?
Our galaxy, the Milky Way.
Can you describe Mercury’s relationship in size and where it is located in our solar system?
This is the smallest planet in our solar system and it is also the closest to the sun. It has a diameter of 5 million meters and it is 45 billion meters away from the sun.
Can you describe Venus’ relationship in size and where it is located in our solar system?
This is the third smallest planet in our solar system and it is also the second closest to the sun. It has a diameter of 12 million meters and it is 108 billion meters away from the sun.
Can you describe Earth’s relationship in size and where it is located in our solar system?
This is the fourth smallest planet in our solar system (it is also the planet we live in) and it is also the third closest to the sun. It has a diameter of 12 million meters and it is 152 billion meters away from the sun.
Can you describe Mars’ relationship in size and where it is located in our solar system?
This is the second smallest planet in our solar system and it is also the fourth closest to the sun. It has a diameter of 7 million meters and it is 228 billion meters away from the sun.
Can you describe Jupiter’s relationship in size and where it is located in our solar system?
This is the biggest planet in our solar system and it is also the fourth furthest away from the sun. It has a diameter of 140 million meters and it is 778 billion meters away from the sun.
Can you describe Saturn’s relationship in size and where it is located in our solar system?
This is the second biggest planet in our solar system and it is also the third furthest away from the sun. It has a diameter of 116 million meters and it is 1434 billion meters away from the sun.
