L5 Flashcards
What is chemical formulae?
The formula for a molecule or compound which tells us how many of each type of atom there is.
What do the subscript numbers (small numbers) mean?
They tell us how much of the atom there is in the molecule or compound. After an atom, that is where this number is located e.g. H2O means that there are 2 hydrogens and one oxygen. If there is only one of the atom, it doesn’t have this subscript number.
What is a chemical equation?
It is a symbolic representation of a chemical reaction.
What is a coefficient number?
These numbers (they are bigger than subscript numbers) come before an element in a chemical equation, they show the ratio of the reactants and products e.g. 2H2 + O2 = 2H2O this means there is twice as much hydrogens as oxygens.
