L4 : Vitamin D and E Flashcards
WHAT VITAMIN IS A GROUP OF STEROLS WITH HORMONE LIKE ACTION ?
vitamin D
how is vitamin D activated ?
25- hydroxylation in the liver and then 1 alpha-hydroxylation in kidney to produce the active form which is 1, 25 dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol)
what is the main metabolic role of vitamin D ?
Maintains adequate plasma levels of calcium by acting on intestinal mucosal cells , distal kidney tubes and bone
what is vitamin D deficiency in adults called ?
osteomalcia
what vitamin is a mixture of 8 naturally occurring tocopherols? and which of these proteins is the most abundant
?
vitamin E, Alpha tocopherol
what is the role of vitamin E ?
inactivate the reactive oxygen species . it is the major lipid soluble anti-oxidant in cell membranes and lipoproteins
why do vitamin E deficiencies occur ?
They occur due to abnormalities in membrane metabolism and integrity.
