Picture archiving and communication systems.
Manages healthcare images acquired on the modalities. Images can be stored distributed and viewed.

PACS COMPONENTS
STS - local cache (fast for rapid viewing
LTS - the archive, online or off-line media, older image storing
Viewer application - program for viewing images, can contain more advanced features. Software is installable or web-based.
Hierarchical database - insures data is stored in organised and structured manner
PACS ARXHIVES
Vendor Neutral archives
1 - standard historic PACS archive. All data in DICOM format identified by accession number
2 - modern PCS, images images saved and viewed in different formats.
3 - multimedia archive with universal acceptance of multimedia file formats
4 - build on level three with access to several neighbouring sites
5 - stores and digital file. Full interoperability for sharing data across hospitals and regions.
