L4: Pollution Flashcards
List some pollutants
Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon pariculates, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide and methane
Consequences of carbon dioxide
Global warming and climate change
Consequences of carbon monoxide
Toxic and binds to haemoglobin
Consequences of carbon particulates
Breathing problems and soot on buildings
Cosequences of nitrogen oxides
Acid rain
Consequences of sulphur dioxide
Acid rain
Why is acid rain a problem?
Because the rain makes soil more acidic, killing crops and kills fish by making lakes acidic
How is carbon dioxide formed?
Complete combustion
How is carbon monoxide formed?
Incomplete combustion
How are carbon particulates formed?
Incomplete combustion
How are nitrogen oxides formed?
The nitrogen in the air reacts with oxygen at high temperatures, mostly in car engines
How is sulphur dioxide formed?
Fuels with sulphur impurities are burned
