L4 - non-immune mechanisms Flashcards
Intrinsic host defences
always present, apoptosis, autophagy, RNA silencing, antiviral proteins
Innate defence
induced by infection
macrophages and natural killer cells
adaptive immuntiy
tailored to a pathogen
Epithelium
tissue composed of cells that line the cavities and surfaces of structures throughout the body, many glands also formed
epithelium location
lies on top of connective tissue
basement membrane
separates connective tissue and epithelium layers
Respiratory epithelium
erves to moisten and protect the airways, also acts as a barrier to potential pathogens
Mucocilliary escalator
action prevents tissue injury and infection
Airway mucus
viscoelastic gel containing water, carbohydrates, proteins and lipids
Mucus
secreted by goblet cells fo the airway surface epithelium and submucosal glands
Mucus function
protects epithelium from foreign materials and fluid loss
Cilia
beat in directional waves to move mucus up the wairtways, transport mucus from lower respiratory tract into the pharynx
Cough
expulsive reflex that protects lungs and respiratory passages from foreign bodies
cough causes
irritants, disease conditions an dinfections
sneeze
involuntary expulsion of air containing irritants from nose
