L4 - Neurulation Flashcards
Apical basal polarity
Neural plate neuroepithelial cells are polarised
A band of F actin is at the apical side
- If this pulls tight, the cells are constricted and change shape
During neurulation many molecules interact with
F-actin to make it constrict
They are also differently distributed to basal or apical edges
Changes in cell shape are signalled by?
Folate leading to changes in tissue shape
Deficiencies in folate
During neurulation a topologically flat surface pinches off to form the CNS
Deficiencies in folate can cause failure to close that tube - spina bifida
Xenopus studies on neurulation
They have externally visible developing embryos
Key role of folate receptors at apical surface of the neural plate—where it interacts with cytoskeletal and adherens junction components
