l4 : media convergence Flashcards
what is media convergence?
the way that a whole range of different kinds of information can be combined and delivered in one format. eg. videos, texts and images can be stored on one wensite
how can digital communication be related to marxist theory?
predominantly developed in a western world which perpetuates capitalist ideas. eg. profit, private ownership and material objects are important
what are the three different levels that digitalisation and media convergence operates on?
- technological convergence : boyle (2005)
- economic convergence
- cultural convergence
what is technological convergence by boyle (2005)?
digitalisation led to merging of different types of information (video, text, voice, emails) which can be merged onto a single delivery system such as a smartphone. the information can be delivered immediately across a range of platforms. separate forms of media can be accessed through one device.
what is economic convergence?
media, tv and telecommunication companies that used to operate in separate spheres of development and production are engaging in technical and economical alliances with each other to produce multi-media delivery systems.
what is cultural convergence?
most members of society interact with each other using some type of digital communication. old forms of communication are now replaced by digital forms. cultural convergence has also led to consumption patterns changing, whereby 60% of british adults use the internet to buy products such as holidays, insurance, clothes etc.
what is big data?
data was stored on paper which meant people had to be literate and have access to the piece of paper in order to gain the data. most data today is stored electronically and has allowed huge amounts of info to be distributed to the whole world with vast amounts of sources.
big data refers to extremely large data sets that may be analysed digitally and non-digitally to reveal patterns and trends. big data is big in terms of the storage and the number of people using it and the opportunities it presents.
what are the 5 types of big data?
- volume
- velocity
- variety
- variability
- complexity
what does volume mean in big data?
info now stored about online communications, purchases and transactions which produces a large amount of data. cost of keeping has decreased, so volume is no longer an issue in terms of costs
what does velocity mean in big data?
data is streaming at unprecedented speeds and must be dealt with promptly
what does variety mean in big data?
data comes in different formats such as structured (numeric databases) or unstructured (text documents, email, video, audio etc.)
what does variability mean in big data?
data flows can be inconsistent. when an event is trending, it suddenly becomes widely popular online. seasonal and event triggered peak data might be challenging to manage
what does complexity mean in big data?
the data can come from multiple sources and therefore could cause issues when trying to match, sort and transform the data across different systems
