-“An umbrella term for any device or system that allows individuals to perform tasks they would otherwise be unable to do or increases the ease and safety with which tasks can be performed”.

what are some difficulties encountered when choosing technology?
- Bewildering array of options
- Devices are often complex
- Fragmented information and service system
- Limited understanding of resources and options
- Decision making complex & involves compromises
- Limited funding available
when choosing an AT, what does the process need to consider?
- recognize that people are unique & have different needs
- focus on client and others (family members, support people, employers) concerns & assist them in defining their needs
- utilise existing strategies & supports
- introduce additional strategies & supports
- identify barriers in the environment
- address the barriers & provide structures to ensure continued success
what is the process of AT
- Begins BEFORE initial contact with a service provider
- Continues BEYOND an encounter with a particular service
- Service providers need to ensure users understand the process and how their services can contribute to this process
what is the process for acquisition and use of AT (identifying the best option)?
