L31 Flashcards
define symbiosis, mutualism, commensalism
- close association of organisms of 2 different species (live together)
-association is beneficial to both (exchange)
-associal is beneficial to only 1 partner
define parasite + parasitoid
- one who lives at another expense, causing HARM
- can be direct (only 1 host exploited, monxenous) or indirect (2 or more hosts exploited, parasite switches, heteroxenous parasite)
-organism that feeds up its host + almost always causes death of the host following the parasitic exploitation
define definite host, intermediate host, and paratenic/transport host
- host where parasite reaches sexual maturity
- host required for parasite development, but where parasites do NOT reach sexual maturity
- parasite does not undergo any development, but in which it remains alive and infective to another host
define vectors, mechanical + biological
-organism (invertebrae) that transmits the parasitic agent fromj 1 vertebrate host to another
-mechanical: no development or multiplication fo the microorganism takes place
- biological: in which either multiplication or development of microorganism occurs
heminmetabolous vs holometabolous metamorphosis of arthropoda
-incomplete metamorphosis
-preadult stages are morphologically similar to adults (gradual change in body form)
-all stages feed the same, inhabit same environment
-complete metamorphosis
-preadult stages are not morphologically similar to adults (obvious change from larva to adult)
-larvae feed different/, inhabit different environment
