Q

What are the 3 components a nucleotide is made up of?

A
  1. Phosphate groups
  2. A sugar
  3. A nitrogenous base (A, T, C, G)

Q

What do the nitrogenous bases form? What are they held together by?

A

Nitrogenous bases form the rungs of the double helix ladder by pairing together. These are held together by weak hydrogen bonds that can be broken when the ladder ‘unzips’

Q

What are chromosomes made of?

A

Two individual strands linked together (also known as a chromatid).
A gene is a small section that makes up this chromosome - each gene coding for a different function (also known as alleles)

Q

Where do you get chromatids from?

A

One from mum, one from dad
They mix together and get held by a centromere which can keep it together or make it easy to split when needed.
They combine and change structures to form a chromosome

17
Q

All about genes

A

Section of chromosome
Small section of DNA tightly coiled
Small part of DNA sequence
Genes are joined, code for different things
Genes are building blocks for chromosomes
Genes are close to each other, they are all one and have a double helix
