L3 - One sample and Independent T-Test Flashcards
When do you use a a one sample t-test?
When data is collected for one variable for a single population.
No comparisons between groups
What assumptions need to be in place in order to carry out a one sample t-test?
Continuous measurement of the test variable
Independent data points
Approx. normal distribution
No significant outliers
How do you calculate a one sample t-test?
mean - hypothetical mean / standard error
What is H0 for one-sample t-tests?
Population mean = specified mean
What is H1 for one sample t-tests?
Population mean differs from the specified mean
When do you use an independent samples t-test?
Comparing 2 independent groups
Each ppt provides 1 data point for 1 group
What are the pros of independent samples t-tests?
Avoids order effects
Simple to construct + control
What are the cons of independent samples t-tests?
Larger sample sizes needed
Ppts differences may affect results
What assumptions need to be in place to carry out an independent samples t-test?
Independent groups
Continuous DV
Approx normal distribution
No significant outliers
Equal variance in each group (tested with Levene’s Test)
How to calculate independent samples t-tests?
mean - hypothetical means / standard error of the difference between means
What is H0 for independent samples t-tests?
No differences between groups (IV doesn’t affect DV)
What’s H1 for independent samples t-tests?
Differences exist in DV due to IV
