L3 - Hope for South Wales? Flashcards
What has the decline in the primary and secondary industries in certain parts of the UK led to?
Lack of opportunity, investment, spiral of decline and poverty in certain regions.
How has South Wales been affected by deindustrialisation?
It used to be a prosperous region, built on coal mining, steel making and other ‘heavy industries’.
What actions have the UK government taken to address regional inequalities?
Tax breaks, loans, investments in infrastructure.
How are governmental attempts to reduce inequalities controversial?
On the one hand clear benefits can be identified, and investments create jobs and contribute to a multiplier effect in South Wales. However some of the investment would have happened anyway and in the case of LG in South Wales, government subsidies were ultimately unsuccessful in attracting significant investment and jobs. Further, TNCs are less likely to commit if they’ve invested less themselves and relied on government aid.
