L3 Gas Pressures Flashcards

1
Q

What is Dalton’s Law?

A

the total barometric pressure is the sum of the pressures of each of the individual gases

partial pressure - the amount of collisions just for one species of gas

Q

gases will ALWAYS travel down what?

A

their partial pressure gradients - from areas of high to low partial pressure

sometimes they can travel down concentration gradients…

Q

how do you calculate the partial pressure?

A

atmospheric pressure x precent in air = partial pressure

Patm = 760 mmHg X 0.21 O2 = 159.6 mmHg of Oxygen

Q

what happens to barometric pressure as you increase altitude?

A

partial pressure decreases

  • there are less collisions
  • percent of each gas stays the same!

Q

what happens when water is added to gas?

A

partial pressure must be repartitioned because you must account for the addition of water

dry air O2 PP = 159.2
water sat. air O2 PP = 149.37

partial pressure decreases with water addition!

Q

what is Henry’s law?

A

Dissolved gas (content) = solubility coeff x partial pressure of gas

if you want to the know mass/content of the gas

if solubility is low, so is mass of dissolved gas
