L3 Causal and correlational research Flashcards
What is a research design?
A plan for the collection, measurement, and analysis of data, Within the constraints put on the researcher
Causal research
- related to experimental research
- study causal relationships between variables
What is Causality?
- X and Y co-occur (correlate, both change)
- A logical explanation for the effect of X on Y is needed
- X proceeds Y in time
- no other cause (Z) explains the co-occurrence of X and Y
What is a lab experiment?
- Artificial environment (not true natural world)
- in which one or more IVs are manipulated
- after which the effect on the DV is measured
What is a field experiment?
- An experiment carried out in the natural environment (Not aware)
- but manipulation is possible
A/B testing

Correlational research consists of?
- Archival research
- Survey research
What is archival research?
• Research based on data that already exists
What is external archival research?
• Data generated by sources outside the firm
e.g. stock price info, or from research agencies
What is internal archival research?
• Existing company data (in-house information)
e.g. sales data
What is survey research?
• Research based on a questionnaire to which respondents record their answers typically with closely defined alternatives
Contrived vs non-contrived
contrived = artificial setting non-contrived = natural environment
