L3 - An Infection Model Flashcards
Which are prokaryotes and which are eukaryotes?
- virus
- parasite
- fungus
- bacteria
Eukaryotes - fungus, parasites
Prokaryotes - bacteria, virus
When considering a potential infection in a patient, give three factors we need to consider in regards to the individual e.g. age
Age Gender Physiological state - e.g. pregnancy Pathological state - co-morbidities Social factors - e.g. IV drug use/sexuality etc
What are the three main categories to consider in regards to an individual patient -first is person
1) person
2) time
3) place
Explanation - time - calendar time and relative time.
Explanation - place - where have you been/ where are you currently residing/ working etc
What are the four questions you always ask when diagnosing an infection
1) where have you been?
2) what have you been doing?
3) who have you been doing it with?
4) were there any animals involved?
Name three mechanisms of infection
Direct spread Inoculation Haematogenous - spread by blood Ingestion Inhalation Vector Vertical transmission
Give an example of a disease spread by
a) inoculation
b) ingestion
c) inhalation
d) vector
a) HIV
b) food poisoning
c) influenza/tuberlosis/chicken pox
d) dengue fever/malaria/zika virus
What is the physiological point of inflammation?
Protects against infection and injury. Works by localising the damage and eliminating the damage to surrounding tissue
