L27 NOT RELEVANT (non-linear optics) Flashcards
What is the scope of Nonlinear Optics?
All phenomena in which the optical parameters of materials are changed with irradiation of light.
What is required for Nonlinear Optics?
High optical intensities, thus Nonlinear Optics matured with laser technology.
Who predicted two-photon absorption and when?
Maria Goeppert-Mayer predicted two-photon absorption in 1931.
What are Quadratic χ(2) materials?
Materials where the second-order susceptibility χ(2) is non-zero, enabling second harmonic generation and other nonlinear effects.
What are the characteristics of Centrosymmetric and Non-Centrosymmetric materials?
Centrosymmetric materials do not exhibit second-order nonlinearity, while Non-Centrosymmetric materials do.
What is the relationship between energy and wavelength of light?
Energy (E) is inversely proportional to the wavelength (λ) by the equation E = hc/λ, where h is Planck’s constant and c is the speed of light.
What are some materials for nonlinear processes?
Materials include Quartz, KDP, Lithium niobate, Cadmium sulfide, Benzen ring, PDA-PTS, Dyes, and organometallic compounds.
What is the primary limitation of current nonlinear optics?
High power consumption, bulky materials, phase mismatch, and reduced signal output are key limitations.
