L20, Exercise at Altitude Flashcards
1
Q
What makes altitude stressful?
A
Decrease in PO2, decrease in temperature, low humidity, low liquid water, high wind, high uv radiation.
2
Q
What are the physiological effects of high altitude?
A
Increased ventilation, increased glycolysis and energy use, decreased fluid and energy in, decreased gut absorption.
3
Q
What are the potential results of high altitude?
A
Hypoxia, hypothermia, hypohydration.
4
Q
What is the trend for aerobic power and altitude?
A
Aerobic power decreases non-linearly with an increase in altitude.
5
Q
What is the first response to high altitude?
A
Hyperventilation due to low PO2.
6
Q
What are long term responses to high altitude?
A
Decrease in blood plasma, decrease in stroke volume and max HR.
