L18, Exercise in the heat 2 Flashcards
At what core temperature does exhaustion occur due to heat intolerance?
38 degrees (possibly higher if a good athlete).
What are three forms of cardiovascular strain caused by heat stress?
Decrease in blood pressure, decrease in blood flow to several tissues and organs, decrease blood flow to skin muscle and brain (increased HR also causes a decrease in VO2 max).
What psychophysical strain is caused by heat stress?
Increased perceived exertion.
What metabolic strain is caused by heat stress?
Muscle glycogen depletion.
What are the four main personal factors governing performance in the heat?
Aerobic fitness (beneficial), heat acclimatisation (beneficial), initial physiological status (e.g. hydration, metabolism, illness etc.), hydration (low body water impairs CV function, sweat production, cognition).
What causes heat exhaustion?
Homeostatic capacity exceeded.
What causes exertional heat stroke?
Major cellular disturbances mainly due to a large increase in temperature and immune disturbances caused by illness.
What are 5 ways decrease heat strain and increase performance.
Increase aerobic fitness and heat acclimatisation, decrease clothing and carried weight,
