L2 Reproductive Organs Flashcards
Gonads(ovaries)
- location
- function
Lateral wall of pelvis, inferior to pelvic inlet
Egg production, hormone secretion
Gonads (ovaries)
-VAN
ovarian arteries and veins
Nerves- ovarian plexus (abdomen)
Ovaries
-contents in the cortex
Ovarian follicles Smooth muscle cells Corpus luteum Theca cells Granulosa
Ovaries
-contents in the medulla
Blood/lymph vessels and nerves
Fallopian tubes
-function
inner wall contain cilia that propel ovum
Fimbriae- finger like projections which capture released egg into ft
-infindubulum, ampulla(fertilisation takes place here), ishthmus
Fallopian tubes
-VAN
Branches from uterine and ovarian arteries and veins
Innervation- symp from ovarian and parasymp from pelvic splanchnic nerves
Uterus
-3 layers
Perimetrium
Myometrium
Endometrium- site of implantation
Uterus
-innervation
Symp- hypogastric plexus
Parasymp- pelvic splanchnic nerves
Uterus
-somatic innervation
touch and pain via somatic afferents to S2-S4
External genitalia- female
VAN
Labia
Urethra
Clitoris
Bartholin
VAN- pudendal artery & vein, innervation: branches of genitofemoral and pudendal n
Testis
-contents
250-300 lobules, each with 4 seminiferous tubules
- Sertoli cells support germ cell production
- spermatogenic- generate sperm cells
Leidig cells (instertitial)- secrete testosterone
Internal duct system - male
VAN
Arteries- inferior vesicular, middle rectal
Venous- same as arteries
Innervation- symp from hypogastric plexus and splanchnic, parasympathetic from pelvic splanchnic nerves (S2-3)
Prostate
2 way valve
Secretes prostatic fluid
Urethra-
Male
Leads into prostatic urethra
-become membranous then penile spongy urethra
Scrotum
Houses testes in cooler environment, smooth muscle assists in regulating temperature,
Scrotal vessel (pudendal and genitofemoral n)
