L2 Intro to movement and muscel Flashcards
What is the function of skeletal muscle (3)
Movement that is under voluntary control
Posture - stability
Heat production as muscle activity expends energy thus producing heat
4 characteristics of Muscle
ICEE
Irritability - ability to response to stimulation
Contractility - ability to shorten when sufficiently stimulated
Extensibility - ability to lengthen beyond its resting length when stretched by an external force
Elasticity - ability to return to its resting length after stretch
4 STPES IN MUSCLE CONTRACTION
- action potential
- cross bridge formation
3.power stroke
4.recovery stroke
What is a motor unit
A neúron + the muscle fibres
What is isometric movement
No movement
Occurs when a muscle generate a force and attempts to shorten but does no overcome the external resistance
What is concentric
a shortening contraction
Occurs when the muscle shortens and joint movement occurs as tension develops
What is eccentric
Lengthening contraction
Occurs when the external resistance exceeds muscle force and the muscle lengthens while developing tension
What is agonist or prime mover
generates most of the force to produce the movement
Synergist
generates force to help agonist
antagonist
opposes movement of the agonist
fixator
stabilisers the origin of the agonist muscle
Muscel types
Circular
convergent
multipennate
parrallel
unipennate
bipennate
