L2: Intra-oral anatomical landmarks Flashcards
what is the primary stress bearing area ?
crest of maxillary ridge
incisive papilla covers the incisive foramen at the anterior end of the median palatine raphe which contains :
nasopalatine N. & V.
-pressure on which will result in a burning sensation for the patient which is why this area should be relived when producing dentures
other important notes on the incisive papilla :
- guide for antro-posterior position of centrals
-line drawn posterior to it , perpendicular to the midline indicates canine position
where is the palatine rugae and what is its importance ?
-elevation in soft extending laterally from midline in anterior part of hard palate
-important for pronunciation of S sound
-serves as one of stress bearing areas in palate
median palatine raphe is:
relieved in denture to avoid rocking or midline fracture
bony projections of palatine bone :
torus palatinus
-if small they are relived by dentures to avoid rocking but if they are large they need to be surgically removed
what is the secondary stress bearing area in the maxilla?
maxillary tuberosity (provides resistance against lateral movments
where is the root of the zygomatic arch located ?
lower portion of zygomatic process of maxilla , above first molar
-it is both a supporting structure and a limiting structure
fovea palatinus importance :
posterior border of upper denture should be 2mm posterior to fovea platinus
residual alveolar ridge of mandible is used as:
secondary load bearing area only if it is thick enough
retro-molar pad should be:
covered by denture for retention ->lower peripheral seal
external oblique ridge is a ___ structure
limiting and support .lower denture should not extend beyond it so it does not come in contact with masseter muscle influence area and avoid denture displacement
primary stress bearing area in lower arch:
buccal shelf of bone , area that lies between crest of residual alveolar ridge and external oblique ridge
pressure on mental foramen causes:
numbness of the lower lip and should be relived
mental foramen , in case of excessive bone resorption may be located :
at crest of mandibular ridge
