L2: friction Flashcards
what is friction?
it always slows moving objects down, it opposes motion
when is friction created?
whenever two touching objects or surfaces rub past each other
what do we call it when friction occurs in air?
air resistance
what do we call it when friction occurs in water?
water resistance
what is an independent variable and where does it go on a table?
this is the variable that you change and it goes on the left
what is a dependent variable and where does it go on a table?
this is the variable that is measured and it goes on the right
what would the dependent variable be when a scientist measures the mass of different species of frogs on a weighing scale?
mass (g)
What is the thinking distance when driving a car?
the distance a car travels before the brakes apply
what is the braking distance when driving a car?
the distance a car travels whilst it is braking
what is the stopping distance when driving a car?
the sum of the thinking distance and the braking distance
what comes first, the thinking distance or the braking distance?
the thinking distance
what is important during the braking distance?
having as much friction as possible so that the car doesn’t skid
can you name a few things that the friction between the tyres and road is affected by (factor affecting braking distance)?
inflation pressure of tyres, road surface and weather (ice, etc), quality of brakes, speed of car
can you name a few things that the friction between the tyres and road is affected by (factor affecting thinking distance)?
drugs and alcohol, tiredness, medication
