L2 - explanations for conformity Flashcards
who developed a theory to explain why people conform
deutsch and gerrard
what is NSI
avoid behaviour that will make us rejected/ridiculed due to need for social approval and acceptance
likely to lead to compliance
what is ISI
likely to happen when a situation is ambiguous or when others are experts as people have a need to be right
leads to internalisation
strength of NSI
asch asked pp to say which of 3 test lines was the same length as the standard line
pps in a group of confederates who purposely gave the wrong answer when right answer was obvious
in 33% of trials, pps conformed and gave the wrong answer
due to NSI, all knew the right answer but worries they would be ridiculed if answered differently to everyone else
strength of ISI
jenness asked pp to estimate how many beans in a jar
pp had to do it individually first then with a group
when in a group, pps estimates were similar values
due to ISI, pps are uncertain about actual number of beans so are influenced by group to be right
weakness of NSI
suggested that there is a 3rd explanation for conformity
ingratiational conformity - group influence does not enter into decision to conform, conformity motivated by need to impress of gain favour rather than fear or rejection
weakness of ISI and NSI
dispositional factors
those with internal locus of control less likely to conform than those with external locus
NSI and ISI cannot exaplin this finding
those with internal believe what happens is due to their own behaviour, external is when people believe what happens is due to fate
