L2 Chemistry pt 2 Flashcards
Ion (def)
An atom that entirely loses or gains on electron is an ion
Ionic bond
A bond between two ions
Hydrophilic molecule
molecules and ions that dissolve in water
Hydrophobic molecule
molecules that do not dissolve in water
Hydrophobic interaction
The hydrophobic interaction describes non polar molecules being forced together in water, because being together minimizes the disruption of hydrogen bonding in the surrounding water.
Van der Waals interaction
Attraction between non polar molecules via transient dipoles
Place the bonds in order of strongest to weakest
Hydrogen, van der walls, covalent, ionic, hydrophobic interaction
Covalent > Hydrogen > Ionic > Hydrophobic > Van der Waals
Acids
Acids release a H+ ions (protons) in solution
Bases
Bases accept a H+ (protons) in the solution
What is a carboxyl group?
(strong or weak acid or strong or weak base?)
weak acid
What is a amino group?
(strong or weak acid or strong or weak base?)
weak base
how do you measure the pH?
using the number of protons / concentration of protons
