L2- Case Studies Flashcards
What is a case study?
Case studies- detailed investigation/insight of a single individual/group/institution
How is data collected in a case study and what approach does it take?
Aim to be 🧪 in approach and objective and systematic methods used to collect data
What is the sample like in a case study?
Usually focus on small no. of ppl- maybe because psychologist only found 1 or 2 individuals who display rare/fascinating 🏃♂
What type of data is collected in a case study?
Psychologists can either collect qualitative in depth data e.g. from interviews and observations or quantitative data e.g. from questionnaires (mixture typically used)
What is the time frame like on a case study?
Takes place over long period of ⏰- when case study may become longitudinal study- person/group tracked over period of ⏰ to look for changes that might occur
What are the evaluation points of a case study?
👎- ⬇️ reliability- unusual cases … replicating them exactly unlikely
👍- ⬆️ validity- rich yields of data & in depth analysis- qualitative data- ⬆️ valid than quantitative data
👎- Findings ✖️ generalised to whole population- due to small sample size
👍- New findings- detail collected may conflict with current theories & … stimulate new paths for research by allowing investigation of things which are rare and unusual
