L1- Content Analysis and Coding- Thematic Analysis Flashcards
Define content analysis
Content analysis- observational π research method- π€ about πβββ being seen- summaries & describes communication in systematic way- allow conclusions to be drawn βοΈ
How many steps are there in carrying out a content analysis?
4
How do you carry out a content analysis?
1) Sampling: CHOOSE OUT OF 2
- Time sampling- log πβββ at regular β° intervals
- Event sampling- log specified events as they happen
2) Record data- in table, video, notes π etc
3) Categorise data- into specific behaviours πβββ
4) Tally up data- count occurrence of individual specified behaviours πβββ
What examples of data can a content analysis be used for?
transcripts for interviews, documents/texts etc
What happens if the data is too large to analyse initially?
researcher creates coding system of pre-determined categories applied to the content
What is a pilot study often used for in content analysis?
Pilot study- often used to test coding system/categories- ensure βοΈ overlap but separate
What type of data does a content analysis generate?
generates quantitative data for researcher to analyse
What is thematic analysis?
Thematic analysis- when content analysis generates qualitative data e.g. themes emerge from data collected- βdreamingβ βsnoringβ or βinterrupted sleep π€ β
What is a theme and what is the difference between a theme and coding used in content analysis?
Theme- idea that reoccurs in content being analysed- β¬οΈ descriptive than coding
What are the evaluation points for content analysis?
π- βοΈ very scientific or objective- categories created by researcher themselves β¦ bias likely
π- Easy technique to use and βοΈ too β° consuming
π- Cause & effect βοΈ be established as data only described
π- Produces reliable data- similar results gained if repeated
