L19- Tumour classification Flashcards
What is a Benign tumour of Surface (non-glandular / non-secretory) epithelium called?
Papilloma
What is a papilloma?
Benign tumour of Surface (non-glandular / non-secretory)
What is a Benign tumour of Glandular (secretory) epithelium called?
Adenoma
What is an Adenoma?
Benign tumour of Glandular (secretory) epithelium
Benign epithelial tumours are then further classified: What is a Benign tumour of squamous epithelium e.g. skin?
SQUAMOUS CELL PAPILLOMA
Benign epithelial tumours are then further classified: Benign tumour of ductal epithelium of the pancreas?
PANCREATIC CYSTADENOMA
How would you name a tumour If it is from non-glandular / non-secretory surface epithelium?
(CELL TYPE) …………….. PAPILLOMA
How would you name a tumour If it is from glandular / secretory / ductal epithelium?
(EPITHELIUM SOURCE) …………….. ADENOMA
What are Malignant epithelial tumours are called ?
CARCINOMAS
Malignant epithelial tumours derived from glandular / ductular epithelium are called …?
ADENO CARCINOMAS
What is the Benign nomenclature of: Stratified squamous epithelium?
Squamous cell papilloma
What is the Benign nomenclature of: Basal cells of the skin?
Basal cell papilloma
What is the Benign nomenclature of: Glandular epithelium of liver?
Liver cell adenoma
What is the Malignant nomenclature of: Stratified squamous?
Squamous cell carcinoma
What is the Malignant nomenclature of: Basal cells of the skin?
Basal cell carcinoma
What is the Malignant nomenclature of: Glandular epithelium of colon?
Colonic adenocarcinoma
What is the Malignant nomenclature of: Glandular epithelium of breast?
Breast adenocarcinoma
All benign mesenchymal tumours have the suffix …
“-OMA”
Benign mesenchymal tumours: e.g smooth muscle and skeletal muscle…names
Smooth muscle = Leiomyo (prefix)
Skeletal muscle = rhabdomyo (prefix)
Malignant mesenchymal tumours are called …?
SARCOMAS
Benign nomenclature of Benign mesenchymal tumours : smooth muscle…?
Leiomyoma
Benign nomenclature of Benign mesenchymal tumours:Cartilage…?
Chondroma
Malignant nomenclature of Malignant mesenchymal tumours : Smooth muscle…?
Leiomyosarcoma
Malignant nomenclature of Malignant mesenchymal tumours: Cartilage…?
Chondrosarcoma
What are Malignant tumour of melanocytes ?
Melanoma
Example of CNS tumours
Meningioma
Astrocytoma
-Glioblastoma multiforme
Oligoendroglioma
Ependymoma
Medulloblastoma
What are Germ cell tumours ?
Common in - gonads
Cells arise from germ cells.
Example of seminomatous tumour?
Eg seminoma
Examples of Non –seminomatous germ cells tumour
eg Teratoma (Teeth / hair / muscle / neural / cartilage)
Examples of Embryonal Tumours
Histological resemblance to
embryonic cells of that organ
RETINOBLASTOMA
NEPHROBLASTOMA (WILMS)
NEUROBLASTOMA
HEPATOBLASTOMA
Malignant tumours with benign names….?
Melanoma
Mesothelioma
Myeloma
Lymphoma
What is a HAMARTOMA?
benign, focal malformation that resembles a neoplasm in the tissue of its origin.
This is not a malignant tumor, and it grows at the same rate as the surrounding tissues.
It is composed of tissue elements normally found at that site, but which are growing in a disorganized mass.
What is a CHORISTOMA?
Nodules of organ parenchyma in another organ
E.g. normal (non-neoplastic) pancreas nodule in stomach
