L17-Exercise and the CVS Flashcards
1
Q
What is VO2 max?
A
The maximum rate of uptake of O2 from the air
The maximum rate of use of O2 by mitochondria
2
Q
What does the VO2 max depend on?
A
Maximum achievable cardiac output
Haematocrit
Resting VO2
3
Q
How does Aerobic training increase Inotropy (length independent activation)?
A
Eccentric hypertrophy stimulated by growth factors released by aerobic excercise. This results in sarcomeres being added in series which increases the stroke volume.
4
Q
What causes the bradycardia in trained athletes?
A
Increased tonic vagal activity and increased local ach release.
5
Q
What vascular changes take place in the heart with training?
A
Increased number of arterioles Increased coronary artery diameter Decreased vascular resistance Increased blood flow Increased capillary:fibre ratio
