L15 - Airworthiness Requirements. Aircraft Flying and Handling Qualities Flashcards
Define airworthiness
Airworthiness is the measure of an aircraft’s suitability for safe flight.
Handling qualities are made up of what two categories?
Flying Qualities and External Factors
Name some flying qualities?
Agility
Stability
Pilot interface
Safety anywhere
Name some external factors that affect handling qualities?
Mission task element
Urgency level
Wind/Turbulence
Environment
Which qualities deal with short term and seperately long term
Flying qualities - Long term tasks
Handling Qualities - Short term response
What are the two types of airworthiness requirements?
Civil aircraft - CAA,FAA,JAA
Military Aircraft/Rotorcraft - Ministry of Defence
What do flying qualities requirements depend on?
Aircraft Class
Flight Phase
Level of flying qualities
What are the different aircraft classes?
Class 1 - Small, light aircraft, primary trainers
Class 2 - Medium weight, low-to-medium manoeuvrability aircraft, e.g. search and rescue, medium transport/ cargo, reconnaissance aircraft.
Class 3 - Large, heavy, low-to-medium maneuverability aircraft such as heavy transport airplanes, tankers, or bombers.
Class 4 - High maneuverability aircraft such as tactical reconnaissance, observation and trainer.
What are the three flight phases?
Cat A - Non-terminal, rapid manoeuvering, accurate tracking (air to air combat, low level flying)
Cat B - Non-terminal, gradual manoeuvering, less precise tracking (climb, cruise, descent)
Cat C - Terminal, gradual manoeuvering, precise tracking (takeoff, approach, landing)
What are the 3 levels of flying qualities?
Level 1 - Qualities are adequete for mission
Level 2 - adequete for mission but requires extra pilot workload
Level 3 - Degraded flying qualities (still controllable)
What is the purpose of flight testing?
aircraft perfomrance analysis (all flight phases, stability, control, structures, certification)
What does the prior information in flight testing include?
Rigid body equations of motion
aerodynamic and engine data
What are Flight test manoeuvres?
They are designed to excite the dynamic respoinse of an aircraft.
What are the various methods of testing?
Analytical models:
- Linearised
- Non linear
Experimental:
- Flight simulators
- Wind tunnel
- Real flight test
What is the name of the scale for handling qualities?
The aggregated Cooper-Harper scale or the thumbprint scale.
