L11- Biological rhythms Flashcards
1
Q
Biological rhythms
A
- distinct patterns of changes in body activity that follow cyclical time periods
- allow organisms to adapt to cycle of day and night and appear to control nearly all behaviours and physiological processes
- evidence to suggest rhythms are inherited- each individual pattern of rhythm with little variation over time + environmental factors have effect on rhythms
2
Q
what are biological rhythms controlled by
A
- internal mechanisms - endogenous pacemakers
- external changes in environment- exogenous zeitgeibers
3
Q
3 main biological rhythms
A
- circadian rhytms (24h)
- infradian rhythms ( >24h)
- ultradian rhythm (<24h)
