GOALS OF TREATMENT
Provide relief from distress
Increase self awareness and insight into problems
Teach coping skills to manage symptoms and distress
Identify and resolve the root causes of the disorder
THEORIES: PSYCHODYNAMIC
Assumptions: unconscious conflicts originate from early life experience, evoke defence mechanisms (repression, denial and displacement) that cause observable behaviours
Aim: identify these conscious conflicts, bring them into conscious awareness (increasing insight), and help client to develop strategies to resolve those conflicts
TECHNIQUES OF PSYCHODYNAMIC
Psychoanalysis a form of psychodynamic therapy
Techniques: free association (read out words and then say frist thing comes into head), dream analysis
Structure: variable, could be 3-5 sessions per week over many years
THEORIES: BEHAVIOURS
Assumptions: psychological disorders arise from faulty learning-classical and operant (instrumental)conditioning
Aim: use associative learning principles, particularly extinction, to unlearn or relearn associations
TECHNIQUES: BEHAVIOURAL
Classical
Flooding or systematic desensitisation for anxiety disorders
Aversion therapy for addiction and sexual offending: associate violence with pleasure, teach to associate with a negative one instead, rapid smoking
Operant
Contingency management for addiction- provide regular urine samples after being treated for addiction, samples test negative they get money
Response shaping for learning disabilities- reward desirable behaviours
CBT
Assumptions: distorted ways of thinking and cog biases cause symptoms of psych disorders
Aims: change the dysfunctional cognitions
DYSFUNCTIONAL COGNITIONS
Selective abstraction- draw conclusions on the bases of just one element of a situation
Minimisation-downplaying positivities
