L10 - Acid Base Balance Pt4 - Acid/Base Disorders Flashcards
1
Q
What is Respiratory acidosis?
A
The struggle to eliminate CO2 from the lungs, can result in lung disease eg.
Emphysema, chronic bronchitis
2
Q
What is respiratory acidosis characterised by?
A
High CO2
High HCO-3
Low pH
3
Q
What is respiratory alkalosis?
A
An increase in CO2 elimination, could be as a result of hyperventilation
4
Q
What is metabolic acidosis?
A
When too much acid is produced or ingested in the body, also by a loss of alkaline fluid.
5
Q
What is metbolic acidosis characterised by?
A
High CO2
Low HCO-3 and pH
Increase in respiratory rate to compensate
6
Q
What is metabolic alkalosis?
A
When too much alkaline fluid is injested, loss of acid, vomiting.
Causes a decrease in respiratory rate
