L1 Vocab Exam 1 Flashcards
Geology
The study of earth, including our planet’s composition, behavior, and history.
nebular theory
The concept that palents grow out of rings of gas, dust and ice surronding a newborn star.
nebula
a cloud of gas or dust in space.
protoplanetary disk
The plate- shaped region of gas and dust, surrounding the newborn sun from which planets are formed.
accretion
The additon of new crust to a planet, by collison of island arcs and oceanic plateaus.
planetesimal
Tiny, soild pieces of rock and metal that collect in a plaentary nebula and eventually forms a planet.
protoplanet
A body that has grown by the accumulation of planentismals but has not yet become a planet.
planet
An object that orbits a star, is roughly spherical and has cleared its neigborhood of other objects.
geosphere
any of the almost spherical concentric regions of matter that make up the earth
Density
mass per unit volume
Buoyancy
The upward force acting on an object immursed or floating in liquid
Differentiation
A process early in a planets history during which dense iron alloy melted and sank downward to form the core, leaving the less dense mantle behind.
Crust
The rock that makes up the outermost layer of the Earth.
Mantle
The thick layer of rock below the Earth’s crust and above the core.
Core
The dense, iron-rich center of the Earth.
