L1: Intro to Module Flashcards
What is alpine tundra?
Alpine tundra is a type of natural region or biome that does not contain trees because it is at high elevation.
What can be used to model the alpine zone?
Energy flow
Many tundra areas have very low energy availability/ output
What processes characterise the alpine zone?
Concentrated processes
Concentrated weathering -> + energy -> serrated landscape (sharp edges, high relief, sharp relief)
Axial glaciers/ rivers/ flows -> incision -> secondary slopes
Axial deposition forms ornament the landscape.
What processes characterise the arctic meso-scale mesoscale (less than 100km)?
Diffused processes
Tectonics/ geology -> low relief -> no axial process
Slow slope transport -> deep weathering -> masks geology
Minimal production of axial deposition
What is arctic landscape like?
Flat/ low relief
Slow slope transport
Tundra/ vegetation/ mosses
Weathered material- deep layer of deposits (ancient)
…in both areas =
Treeless
