L1 - Diversity Of Life Flashcards
Characteristics of life
Cellular organisation, reproduction, metabolism, homeostasis, heredity, response to stimuli, growth and development, and adaptation through evolution.
Origins of life
Either: Oparin-Haldane theory, hydrothermal vent theory, or panspermia
Panspermia theory
Life was brought to earth through space by an asteroid or space dust.
Oparin-Haldane theory
Life arose from inorganic molecules with the building blocks combining to create complex polymers.
Hydrothermal vent theory
Hypothermal vents synthesised molecules that may have created life
Scales of nature
From 10m to 0.1 nm, the smallest being atoms
Evolution
Process by which living organisms change over time throughout changes in the genome.
Requirements for natural selection
Variation, inheritance, selection, and time
Phylogenetic trees
Diagram showing lines of evolutionary descent, from a common ancestor.
Three domains of life
Bacteria, Eukarya, Archaea
Endosymbiosis theory
States, Mitochondria are derived from proteobacteria, chloroplasts are derived from Cyanobacteria. These were engulfed by eukaryotes and tamed, mitochondria were first.
Prokaryotic vs. Eukaryotic
Membrane enclosed organelles are present in eukaryotes.
