L1 - Brain Parts Flashcards
1
Q
What is functional specialisation?
A
Different parts of the brain have different jobs
2
Q
How did the brain develop over the years?
A
- Common ancestors share current brain components
- Olfactory bulbs increase due to hearing for mammals being key
3
Q
What is the difference between a lobe and Cortex?
A
Lobe: Physical area
Cortex: Region
4
Q
Name the key parts of the brain? (Lobes and cortex)
A
- Frontal lobe: motor control, planning, personality, memory
- Temporal lobe: hearing, language
- Parietal lobe: Attention, spatial, perception
- Occipital lobe: visual perception
- Cerebrum
- Cerebellum: automatic actions, motor skills
- Brain Stem
5
Q
How are lobes separated?
A
- They aren’t
- They are heavily linked, reflected in daily processes e.g hearing is auditory but moves into language
6
Q
How did the lobes develop?
A
- Frontal = planning
- Others = sensory
7
Q
What are issues associated with the lobes?
A
- Frontal lobe: Bs Aphasia & Alien limb syndrome
- Temporal: Amnesia, Ws Aphasia, Prosopagnosia (can’t recognise faces)
- Occipital: partial blindness, hemianopia
- Parietal: Hemispatial neglect: not aware that half of vision is obscured
8
Q
What are the folds in the brain called?
A
Sulcus
9
Q
What are the flat bits of the brain called?
A
Gyrus
10
Q
What words are used for top & up?
A
- Dorsal = top
- Superior = up
11
Q
What words are used for bottom & down?
A
- Ventral = bottom
- Inferior = down
12
Q
What is middle describing?
A
Halfway between superior and inferior
13
Q
What is medial describing?
A
Part inbetween the hemispheres
Opposite to lateral
14
Q
What is front & back?
A
- Anterior = front
- Posterior = back
