L1 Acids and bases - chemistry Flashcards
Atoms
Atoms are the smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist which cannot be broken down by any chemical means. Consist of protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Three subatomic particles
Proton
Neutron
Electron
Proton
Protons are found in the nucleus of an atom, larger and heavier than electrons. Have a positive charge (+) and a relative mass of 1
Neutron
Neutrons are found in the nucleus of an atom, large and has a similar mass to (1) however they do not have any electrical charge (0)
Electron
Electrons are found orbiting around the nucleus, has a negative electrical charge (-1) and has a relative mass of 1/2000
Acids have a sour taste
Acids turn blue litmus paper red
