L1 Flashcards
What’s is the structure of the earth
outer core, mantle and crust. The crust is made up of tectonic plates, which are in constant motion.
What is the crust made up of
The crust is made up of tectonic plates.
How do plates move
The plates move because of convection currents in the Earth’s mantle. These are driven by the heat produced by the decay of radioactive elements and heat left over from the formation of the Earth.
Where are volcanoes most likely to occur
Earthquakes and volcanoes are most likely to occur at plate boundaries.
What are the two types of crust
▪ Continental – old, denser
▪ Oceanic – younger, less dense
2 parts of mantle
Upper part is solid – like the crust; together called the lithosphere
Asthenosphere- sticky, viscous,hotter than upper
Describe th asthenosphere
Rock become Heated, rises, spreads, cools, sinks back to the bottom, reheats and rise again
What is th core made or
Iron and nickel
Composition and purpose of magnetosphere
Outer core – liquid iron o Works like an electric dynamic o Producees a magnetic field o Its invitislbe o Protects thre Earth from hamrlful radioactiom from space
