l1 Flashcards
what is a census
Simultaneous recording of demographic data to all persons in a defined area
why is a census useful
Allocation of resources
population characteristics; measures of deprivation: unemplyment, overcrowding
Trends in populations, e.g. Ethnicity or age
how can you measure birth rates
crude birth rate, general fertility rate and total period fertility rate
define crude birth rate
Crude Birth Rate (CBR) – number of live births per 1000 population
define genera; fertility rate
General Fertility Rate (GFR) – number of live births per 1000 fertile women between age of 15-44
define total period fertility rate
Total Period Fertility Rate (TPFR) – average number of children born to a hypothetical women in her lifetime. doesnt take age into account
number of births/ number of women in that age group. add all number up from 15-44 years. number of births per woman
which measure of birth rate is the most accurate
GFR is more accurate for measuring birth rates but not always possible.
takes age specific fertility rates and age distribution into account
what are 2 measures of the death rate
Death rates can be measured as crude mortality rate or age-specific mortality rate
work out the general fertility rate
number of babies born/ number of fertile women x 1000
number of babies per 1000 fertile women
fecundity
physical ability to reproduce
fertility
realisation of the physical ability to reproduce as births
how to measure death rates
crude death rate: number of deaths per 1000 population
age spec death rate: number of deaths per 1000 in an age group
SMR: observed deaths/ expected deaths adjusted for age sex distribution
why collect mortality data
classify cause of death
analyse patterns in mortality rates
identify health problems
inform services
what is a population estimate
applying what is known about births, deaths and migration to the present
population projects
this applys info on births, deaths and migration to the future
