KYASANUR FOREST DISEASE Flashcards
What is the disease?
-KFD is caused by the Kyasanur Forest Disease Virus (KFDV).
-Hard ticks (Hemaphysalis spinigera) are the reservoir of the KFD virus and once infected, remain so for
life
-Rodents, shrews, and monkeys are common hosts for KFDV after being bitten by an infected tick
How it can be transmitted?
- tick bite ,contact with an infected animal, sick or recently dead monkey
- . No person-to-person transmission
- major factor monkeys.Sheeps, goats, cows limited roles
- no evidence of transmission via the unpasteurised milk of infected animals.
Symptoms?
-after 3-8 days chills, fever, and
headache. Severe muscle pain with vomiting, gastrointestinal symptoms and bleeding problems.y low blood pressure, and
low platelet, red blood cell, and white blood cell counts later on.
-illness is
biphasic for a subset of patients (10-20 %) who experience a second wave of symptoms at the beginning
of the third week. These symptoms include fever and signs of neurological manifestations, such as
severe headache, mental disturbances, tremors, and vision deficits.
Who are the vulnerable groups?
one’s having exposure to rural or outdoor settings
How diagnosis can be made?
Early stage-y PCR or virus isolation from
blood.
Later stage- serologic testing using enzyme-linked immunosorbent serologic assay (ELISA)
What is ELISA?
Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) is a test that detects and measures antibodies in blood.
The test can be used to determine antibodies related to certain infectious conditions.
It can be used to diagnose HIV, which causes AIDS, Zika virus etc.
How to prevent disease?
- no specific treatment->early hospitalization
- Vaccine exists.
