Abolition Movement 5.1
A movement that was started to end all slavery within the Atlantic Slave Trade where many countries accepted it and agreed to it.
LO 2: The abolishment of slavery was influenced from the enlightenment act
Empiricism 5.1
A philosophy that knowledge only comes from experience and it can only be picked up from experimentation.
LO 1: Part of the Enlightenment, ideas and theories such as empiricism were developed that helped humans understand the world better
Enlightenment 5.1
An intellectual movement started in Europe between the 1700s and 1800s where people developed ideas and philosophies about religion, humanity, and nature.
LO 1: The rise of Enlightenment ideas caused people to have a better thought and understanding of the world allowing them to awake and see things clearly which caused rebellions and revolutions
Suffrage Movement 5.1
The suffrage movement was a movement where women protested against their lack of rights and not being able to vote.
LO 2: The suffrage movement was inspired by the Enlightenment
American Revolution 5.2
The American Revolution began with colonists separating themselves from the British, wanting to be independent and having disagreements on the tax policies.
LO 3: The Enlightenment inspired Americans to separate from the British, forming their own nation
Bolivar Revolutions 5.2
The Bolivar Revolutions were inspired by the Enlightenment, South Americans fought for their independence from Spain which ended with the independence of many South American countries such as Colombia and Venezuela.
LO 3: The rebellions in South America led to the independence from and formation of new nations
Classical Liberalism 5.2
A belief created by scholars that people would value rights, a constitutional government, and spend less on militaries.
LO 3: This was developed because of people’s discontent with the monarchy system and want for democracy
French Revolution 5.2
The French Revolution started because of a widespread discontent of monarchy and a poor leadership of King Louis XVI.
LO 3: The ideas of the Enlightenment influenced and inspired people to fight for a type of government they wanted such the French wanting the end of monarchy
Haitian Revolution 5.2
The Haitian Revolution was inspired by both the American and French Revolution and was started by the revolution of former Haitian slaves that fought for their freedom and formed their own government.
LO 3: The Enlightenment inspired the revolution to start as they had gotten the idea that everyone should be treated fairly with the same amount of rights
Nationalism 5.2
The sense that a citizen feels of being proud of their own nation and was the reason for many of the revolutions.
LO 1: Nationalism along with the inspiration of the Enlightenment was a major reason for the development of new independent nations
Causes of Industrialization 5.3
The causes of industrialization included the start of machinery making work in agriculture easier and more efficient.
LO 4: Many factors contributed to the start of the advancement in industrialization which eventually led to the start of the Industrial Revolution
Factory System 5.3
A system that was developed involving machinery which made manufacturing more efficient and boosted countries economies.
LO 4: The start of the factory system led to an increase in labor and workers were not paid much
Industrialization 5.4
A switch from mainly agriculture to machinery made the number produced goods increase.
LO 5: The development of industrialization led to an increase in industrial production in Europe but caused for a decline in Asia and the Middle East
Fossil Fuels Revolution 5.5
Fossil fuels were used in producing goods and allowed for innovations such as the steam engine to be useful with fossil fuels.
LO 6: The discovery of fossil fuels made an increase in production having an abundance of this fuel available
Industrial Communication 5.5
The Industrial communication saw the start and development of innovations that improved communication.
LO 6: Innovations such the telephone and railroad improved communication making it quicker to deliver messages and increase trade
Internal Combustion Engine 5.5
The engine used fossil fuels that were previously discovered and made generating power easier and faster.
LO 6: The machine took advantage of the discovered fossil fuels which increased productivity
Second Industrial Revolution 5.5
The second industrial revolution focused on advancements in electronics and communication.
LO 6: The revolution urbanized cities but made farmers lose their jobs forcing them to move to the cities to find a job
Steam Engine 5.5
A new innovation that made boats use the burning on coal to travel which avoided the need to continue to use sails while traveling on water.
LO 6: The steam engine took advantage of the newly discovered resources which made it highly productive and efficient
Meiji Restoration 5.6
Japan opened up their borders after being in contact with the US and wanting to catch up with the rest of the world in industrialization.
LO 7: The opening of Japan to industrialize quickly made Japan rapidly advance making them a regional power
Muhammad Ali 5.6
An officer that became the governor of Egypt and became very powerful, more powerful than the leader and was able to make important choices and decisions on his own.
LO 7: He helped the Ottoman Empire rejoin the other advanced countries as being successful industrializing countries
Capitalism 5.7
A system that was used in businesses that allowed business owners to make profit off of their production.
LO 8: Companies were able to make more money off of their production using this system
Stock Market 5.7
A system that allowed people to buy or sell a small piece of ownership of companies.
LO 8: People could buy small pieces of ownership of a large variety of companies
Transnational Business 5.7
The transnational business came about during the 19th century and allowed companies to sell their goods to more people with transporting their goods out became easier.
LO 8: The global nature of trade allowed for companies to expand their business, reaching and being able to serve customers in different countries
Communism 5.8
A system where everyone’s property was shared together and there was no such thing as individual ownership meaning things were ownership was everyone’s.
LO 9: This type of government was formed by people who were discontent with their current type of government and spread the idea of this new desired type
Labor Unions 5.8
Labor workers who unified to protest about their undesired working conditions.
LO 9: Labor unions had a large impact, leading to the start of laws such as minimum wage
Self-Strengthening Movement 5.8
A movement started by China that promoted the need to learn about the European industrializations which helped them strengthen their military and improve their education.
LO 9: The movement was a way for China to modernize and become a politically and economically stronger nation
Socialism 5.8
An theory on social organization that focused on production and distribution of goods should be owned and managed by a whole community.
LO 9: The idea was spread from people who were discontent with their current form of government
Taiping Rebellion 5.8
A Chinese uprising that revolved around some citizens wanting to end and rid all of foreign influences in their country.
LO 9: The rebellion was an attempt to resist imperialism and complete lost of control to foreign influences
Tanzimat Reforms 5.8
Social reforms within the Ottoman Empire that changed a current law and allowed for students to choose which school they wanted to attend based on what they wanted to study.
LO 9: The move created more support from the citizens making the Ottoman Empire stronger and more stable
Cult of Domesticity 5.9
A belief that there were specific roles for genders and women were suppose to be responsible for maintaining the house and taking care of children.
LO 10: The belief and idea created revolts from many women who disagreed leading to the development of the suffrage movement
New Social Classes 5.9
Social hierachies changed after urbanization increased creating different social classes such the underclass and working class.
LO 10: The social classes separated people based on how much they made at work and the job that they had
Urbanization 5.9
With industrialization increasing, it created more job opportunities in cities but put many farmers out of work making many people move to the cities.
LO 10: Industrialization caused for rapid urbanization which generated a lot of pollution in cities, damaging the environment and also led to an increase in crime rate with a higher population.
