- Late 1970s, Iraq’s Ba’ath party implement settlement policy relocating Iraqi Arabs to areas with Kurdish majorities

- Settlement policy accelerated and large numbers of Kurds were forcibly relocated
- Mar-Aug 1988 in a series of operations code-named Anfal, Iraqi forces sought to quell Kurdish resistance by using large nymbers of chemical weapons on Kurdish civillians
- Iraqi troops killed up to 5k Kurds with mustard gas in Halabjah
