Kubler- Ross theory (stages of dying) Flashcards
Denial and Isolation stage 1
- the person denies that death is really going to take place. It’s common reaction to terminal illness
Anger 2nd stage
- this is where the dying person recognizes that denial can no longer be maintained. denial often gives way to anger. resentment, rage, and envy. this type of anger can cause difficulties in care as anger can become displaced and projected onto physicians, nurses, family members, and even god
Bargaining 3rd stage
this stage of dying is where the person develops the hope that death can somehow be postponed or delayed. they try to bargain with god to delay their death
Depression 4th stage
this is the stage of dying where the dying person perceives the certainty of his or her death.
- a period of grief or depression may occur. this can cause the dying person to become silent, refuse visitors and spend most of their day crying
Acceptance 5th stage
this is when the dying person develops a sense of peace and acceptance of his or her fate, and in many cases a desire to be left alone. the feeling of pain may be virtually absent. this is the final resisting stage before death
