Who was Edgar Aetheling?
Anglo Saxon prince. He was the closest living relative to Edward and had a blood claim. However, he was only 15 years old so the Witan did not support his claim.
Who was Harald Hardrada?
Viking King of Norway. Descendent of the Viking King Cnut who was King of England so believe he had a right to the throne. He had the help of Harold’s brother Tostig as he didn’t like him.
Who was William of Normandy?
Cousin of Edward the Confessor. Edward promised William the throne when Edward was in exile in France.
Who was Harold Godwinson?
Edward’s brother in law as he married his sister. Edward the Confessor promised him the throne on his deathbed. The Witan decided he should be King.
When & what was the Battle of Fulford Gate?
- 20th Sept 1066
- Harold prepared for William of Normandy to invade; him & his army waited at the South Coas April-Sept.
- William doesn’t arrive.
- 8th Sept Harold sends army home & travels to London.
- Invasion in North from Scandinavia (Hardrada)
- Edwin & Morcar brought army to meet them.
- Hardrada won the battle, waiting at Stamford Brifge to receive money & hostages.
When & what was the Battle of Stamford Bridge?
- 25th sept 1066
- Harold marched his troops from London to Stamford Bridge in 5 days, catching Hardrada’s army by surprise after they had been resting.
- Harold won the battle (Tostig, & Hardrada were killed) but he lost a significant amount of his army.
When & what was the battle of hastings?
- 14th October 1066
- Harold arrived at Hastings during the night with 7,000 exhausted men.
- Tried to catch Norman’s by surprise but Norman scouts warned William.
- Harold & army went to the top of Senlac Hill.
- William ordered archers to fire at Harold’s army.
- Harold’s army came down from the hill to join the battle & an arrow hit Harold.
- After hearing he died, his army lost all discipline & were massacred by Normans.
- William had won.
