kohlberg Flashcards
1
Q
define kholbergs explanation
A
The theory is based on the idea that a child’s understanding of gender becomes more sophisticated with age, as their intellectual reasoning becomes more developed.
2
Q
what are the 3 stages
A
- gender identity
- 2 years old
- label themselves and others based on outward appearance
- change gender labels as appearance changes - gender stability
- age 4
- they stay the same gender
- but unsure about others - gender constancy
- 6 years
- gender is consistent = once they realise appearance cant change it
3
Q
low in validity
A
- Kohlberg did interviews on children 2/3 = questions were tailored
- kids lack the adequate vocab to express views clearly
- lacks internal validity = environment affected child answers
- trick questions, asking question twice = confuse the child, not the right answer
4
Q
beta bias
A
- boys have much less less concept of gender roles than girls
- boys show greater resistance to opposite activities than girls = could be due to social/cultural factors
- beta bias = doesn’t pay attention to the difference between 2 genders = assumes girls/boys develop ideas about gender in the same way
5
Q
descriptive rather than explanatory
A
- it describes how a child’s thinking about gender changes as they get older
- fails to explain why gender schemas change
- what is affecting the schemas
6
Q
slaby 1975
A
- asked young children questions such as when you grow up do you want to be a mum or dad
- as predicted by kholbberg they only started to give answers when they reached gender stability
7
Q
stages are too old
A
- children begin to demonstrate gender-appropriate behaviour before reaching gender constancy
- stages are too old
