Qualitative Data
Non-numerical data that describes a quality
Quantitative Data
Numerical data, which may be discrete or continuous
Discrete Data
Data that is counted, and can only take exact values
Continuous Data
Data that is measured, which can take any value in a range
Primary Data
Data that comes directly from first-hand experience, collected it for the purpose of the investigation, being collected by yourself or someone appointed by you
Secondary Data
Data that already exists or has been processed
Data Collection
Data can be collected by direct observation, interviews, surveys, experiments and testing
Independent Variable
The variable that you control and can change to see how it affects the experiment
Dependent Variable
The variable that results
Population
Complete set of items that share a common property
Census
Every member of the population provides data
Sample
Collecting data from part of the population
Bias
The results are distorted, either from a choosing a non-representative sample, poor designed surveys, or no responses to a survey.
Characteristics of a good sample
Representative of the population: large enough size without bias
Random Sample
Every member of the population has the same chance of being chosen
