Q

Are You Aware Of The Main Method Of Teaching At This Medical School?

What Do You Think Are The Advantages Of This Style Of Teaching?

A

UCL: PBL since around 2016 + integrated teaching style
- seen article from dr marina gonzalez head of cardiovascular module for year 1 applied med students in 2016, about the benefits of using a pbl and flipped learning approach when teaching medicine,
- encourages inventiveness, creativity and independence but most of all, innovation, not just taught facts but also how to communicate, develop approaches to problems too
- flipped learning = reverses typical nature of lecture based learning, so student watches lecture independently to help aid solving their problem, and then attend tutorials where private study is discussed and los discussed and results concluded, then teacher facilitates session to make sure los are met

KCL: Integrated
- scientific knowledge taught alongside the clinical knowledge, taught module by module, not by discipline
- equip students with a broad knowledge base and a diverse set of skills, allowing them to approach patient care from a more holistic perspective.
-KCL’s Medicine MBBS degree provides an innovative and integrated curriculum, integrating medical science with clinical teaching throughout with focus on learning in close contact with patients. Its partner hospitals include Guy’s, King’s College and St Thomas’ Hospitals
- assessed on Communication skills
General social and ethical issues
Suitability for the programme and as a health professional
Contribution to the university as a whole

Birmingham: Integrated
Birmingham’s MBChB Medicine and Surgery degree teaches you the practical, theoretical and communication skills needed to become a doctor. You can expect patient contact to start from as early as week 2 and will spend eight days working in the community with GPs and patients each year.

Q

Do you think cadaveric dissection is important for medical students?

A

pros = good way to learn abt body and brings a sense of gravity to anatomy teaching
cons =models can be helpful to generalise structures or represent things in diff way aids teaching

ucl offers full body dissection, and kcl use cadaveric dissection (30%) alongside small group and case based teaching in clinical blocks (70%) - mix of both enables for making sure understanding is clear but also being able to apply knowledge and apply practically
brum = no dissection but prosection = allows for multiple variations of dissected body to be seen, compared to single variation seen in dissected cadaver

Q

why ucl?

A
  • teaching style is integrated = pbl and flipped learning, due to article 2016 by head of cardiovascular module year 1 med students = helps aid creativity and innovation, not just wrote learn knowledge, but also be able to apply and problem solve alongside that, which is a key skill needed to be a doctor and very important being a doctor and being able to diagnose patients in many diff situations and more complex cases
  • tertiary level hospitals readily available and use of teaching hospitals such as royal free and , which can enable students at ucl med to be able to encounter complex cases, which aids in understanding and
  • ucl cancer institute- ucl car t programme = most comprehensive in europe and focuses on using cars (artificial t cell receptors) to allow differentiate any type of t cells and immune response produced when needed + gene editing - ucl 2nd in world and top in europe for CAR T research, due to research activity at ucl + uclh
  • CAR T THERAPY= IMMUNE SYSTEM PART NORMALLY KILL INFECTED CELLS TAKEN FROM BLOOD AND REPROGRAMMED TO RECOGNISE + KILL CANCER CELLS, BY INTRODUCING GENE FOR ARTIFICIAL PROTEIN = CAR

Q

are you aware of the catchment area of the teaching hospitals that this medical school has?

A

ucl: royal free hospital, whittington hospital (helps local people live longer + healthier lives, by providing hospital and community care services in islington and barnet, camden etc… as a part of an ‘integrated care organisation’) + uch university college hospital, francis crick institute (scientific research, cancer research, academic research)
