Knowledge and doubt Flashcards
What can be considered Knowledge?
For knowledge to be seen as true you usually check to see if it’s True Justified Belief
Justification - we need to have supporting evidence to back up the belief
Truth - The claim must be true. it must relate to reality rather than appearance
Belief - You have to actually believe the proposition (the statement)
What are sceptics?
Sceptics are philosophers who oppose the tripartite theory of knowledge
These philosophers believe knowledge can never ever ever be certain
They have 5 arguments to support this theory
What is The Problem of accidental correctness?
Of you didn’t know your watch was broken and someone asked you the time you can accidentally have true, justified, belief
What is The problem of Empirical evidence?
Your senses can be tricked or wrong. they are not trustworthy sources of justification. For example optical illusions they make you see things that aren’t there or see things differently then they actually are
What is The problem with reason?
To use reason to prove knowledge means you have to have this reason without any input from experience. Knowledge you gain in this way is called Innate Knowledge
What is The problem of Authority?
Skeptics find it very hard to trust authority for the following reasons:
- They can be lying or concealing for their own benefit
-They could be wrong or not up to date
-They could be biased
